The Northman, Netflix's Interceptor, and more new movies to watch at home

Happy Friday, Polygon readers! This week is light on new movies on VOD or on streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus, but we’re here nonetheless for a look at the options for watching at home.

This week includes Northman Broadcasting debut on Peacock, gay talk Pride and prejudice Adapted from Hulu, a new action movie on Netflix, Disney Plus’ star girl A sequel, and more to check out. Let’s dive in.

Northman

The visceral historical revenge drama Robert Eggers Northman It tells the story of Amelith (Alexander Skarsgard), the son of a deposed king (Ethan Hawke), who flees his home after his father is betrayed and murdered by his uncle Vuelnir (Clais Pang). Destined to avenge his father’s death, Amelith travels to Iceland disguised as a slave and, with the help of a witch named Olga (Anya Taylor Joy), embarks on his plot for revenge.

From Our review:

The violence that followed (and preceded) Amelith’s arrival in Iceland is bloody and graphic, and Eggers depicts Viking raids on humble villages in impressively designed tracking shots that slide through the death rattles and mud and gurgles of dozens of burlap-clad extras. The dialogue similarly mixes savagery and savagery: one of the characters strangles the curse of death, promising to harm his killer so that “flaming revenge narrows your body.” Another optimist says to a friend, “Together we will rage on the corpse battlefield.” Set it all against a majestic Icelandic landscape and a backdrop of blaring drums and deep bass cheers rolling like a thunderstorm, and the effect is suitably stunning.

Joel Kim Booster stars in this modern gay adaptation directed by Andrew Ahn and written by Booster. It follows a group of friends who travel to their Fire Island vacation spot for one life-changing summer. With Booster, SNL’s Bowen Yang, and Margaret Cho, it promises to be fun and playful.

Interceptor

Collins, a resilient and battleground army captain in charge of a nuclear missile base in the middle of the Pacific Ocean after being expelled from the Pentagon. When terrorists launch a coordinated attack on the base, Collins is forced to use her years of tactical training to thwart the machinations of a former intelligence officer and prevent nuclear annihilation.

Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets

Newt’s quirky, anti-climate quest to secure and deliver his precious cargo lacks the delightful curiosity that provided the first Fantastic beasts A much-needed bump in magic. An iconic theater scene pits Newt and his brother Theseus (Calum Turner) against a crusty leviathan in a Panopticon-style prison tower, as the boys engage in a ridiculous crab picnic, reminding viewers that hilarious play now and then won’t hurt anyone. Regardless, the newt piece of plot is just as beautiful: series director David Yates conveys that this part of the story is put into the past by classifying everything to gray or powdered brown. It’s hard to imagine a child fascinated by this movie in real life, and it’s frustrating to realize that the intended audience here is probably older than kids, yet unwilling to leave this universe behind.

Hollywood Star Girl

Director Julia Hart (fast color) This sequel belongs to Disney Plus movie 2020 star girl. Like the First Amendment, this one swings wildly from the source material: Hollywood Star Girl It is a direct sequel to the movie and not an adaptation of the original novel. Love, star girl. When her mother, Anna (Judy Greer), is hired to act on a movie, Stargirl (Grace VanderWaal) uproots her life and makes new friends in Los Angeles.

When you pick up an unexpected passenger on the road, things take a turn for the worse.
