We just ventured to the theater to see NetflixThe latest hit, and it’s—surprise—another movie that proves you shouldn’t shy away from subtitles. The powerful Indian movie RRR (yes,
RRR, who has just returned to theaters for a very short two-night show (which was supposed to be only one night) on June 1 and 2, represents Roudram Ranam Rudhiram in his original Telugu translations to Rise, Revolt, and Revenge in English (although than that it was originally a placeholder for the names of the director and stars). And now I got a good shot to join Best Netflix Movies existing.
One of our last picks for The best new movies to watch onlineIt is currently ranked #7 on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies Today list in the US (and has been around since yesterday). But that’s just a hint of the movie’s success on Netflix. In its second week on Netflix (May 23-29), RRR reached the number one spot on the streaming service’s non-English movies list, up from sixth in the previous week (May 16-22).
So far, Netflix’s numbers reflect that its viewers watched 25,540,000 hours of the movie in two weeks on the service. Compared to the English-language films on Netflix from last week, that was just over 24 million hours that passed in its first year (in its third week on Netflix), and less than the 32 million hours that “Perfect Pairing” viewers scored (in its second week).
So, what’s all the fuss about?
Why is RRR so popular?
RRR is the latest film by Indian director SS Rajamouli, whose films rank as high fantasy. Released in March, but hard to find in the US for various reasons we’ll get to below, RRR is – in Rajamouli’s own words – “a fantasy friendship between two superheroes”.
Having just watched it, I can say that the description I’ve read – Allori Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Kumaram Bhim (NT Rama Rao Jr), a pair of Indian folk heroes, fighting the British colonists in the 1920s – is the best way to distill a complex and fascinating film Extremely.
This may not sound fancy to you, but check out our Netflix demo. Jam in a series of flash-and-miss moments, is a shot where Kumaram Bhim throws a motorcycle at someone, you know, as a weapon.
As someone who has proudly watched all the Fast and Furious movies in order and loved Top Gun Maverick, the RRR has been on my radar for weeks. Filled with flying arrows, fire, shedding trees as weapons and tigers craving fire, the RRR was praised by critics, gaining 86% in the rotten tomatoes (Opens in a new tab)by 94% of the audience.
The one star for these reviews is that RRR hasn’t quite penetrated the market here, with only 29 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Analysis: There is one feature in Netflix’s RRR
Two of my friends have been interested in the RRR since it started its limited release in the US. I, unfortunately, missed the first window when local theaters in New York City were regularly checking RRR.
But I was told that Netflix, for some reason, got the lower version of RRR. As you will see when it loads, Netflix has Hindi subtitles for RRR, not its original Telugu. It may be because Hindi is a more common language, but I’m told the movie has a lot to lose in subtitles, as its music tracks drop something in subtitles from Telugu to Hindi. This is a problem because Netflix is believed to have translated Hindi and not the original Telugu for the English subtitles. As a friend put it, “The lyrics are metallic like f**k when you get live translation” in the theater.
Oh, and I’m told, the RRR scene is the best in theaters. And I can say that’s true, because the experience I had in theaters on Thursday night was unique. We were clapping to the beat of the music in one of the fight scenes in the movie last night, having a great moment.
