Kevin Wong of the Trevor Project shares what’s in his Internet Corner

Here at Mozilla, we’re the first to admit that the Internet isn’t perfect, but we’re also quick to point out that the Internet is absolutely magical. The Internet opens doors and opportunities, allows people to connect with others, and allows everyone to find where they belong – their own pillars of the Internet. We all have an internet story worth sharing. In my internet corner, we talk to people about the online spaces they can’t get enough of, and what we have to save pocket To read it later and what sites and forums it formed.

With Pride Celebrations taking place throughout June, we’re featuring this month’s LGBTQ+ leaders as part of My corner of the internet series. First up is Kevin Wong, Vice President of Communications for the Trevor Project, with whom we spoke about what he consumes online, his love for his cat Izzie and the intersection between the LGBTQ and AAPI communities.

What is your favorite corner of the Internet?

I have been engaging with more Instagram accounts highlighting AAPI news and achievements, such as GoldhouseAnd the Netflix GoldAnd the next oneAnd the NBC Asia America and more. Although there has been a noticeable increase in AAPI representation in media, it’s still not mainstream, so I like to follow these accounts so I can always see what’s going on.

What is a deep dive on the internet that you can’t wait to get back into?

I love weird facts about animals or science, so anytime someone starts an easy-to-digest Twitter thread, I feel like I’m in heaven.

What is the one tab in your browser that you always regret closing?

Definitely my Gmail tab, your hands.

Who is a LGBTQ+ person who has a great online presence and is a role model for you?

Whew, it’s clearly Jay Jordan. He’s a stand-up comedian duo and gets all his followers laughing through some very tough times. I’ve seen him perform a stand-up show in real life too and the hits keep coming!

What can’t you stop talking about on the internet right now?

Over the past five years, I have Not Shut up about our cat, Izzie. She is a Russian blue and she is very affectionate! So she loves strangers.

What was the first online community you interacted with?

I remember growing up really wanting to connect with more LGBT people, so I researched these connections online. Then, when I started working in communications, I dealt with online PR professionals, as well as other AAPI folks on Twitter.

What articles and videos are in your pocket that are waiting to be read/watched right now?

I’ve noticed how quiet it is for me to watch shows and movies I’ve already seen, such as “The Witcher”, “Fullmetal Alchemist” and the John Wick trilogy. Plus, I can second screen or snooze if I like!

If you could create your own corner of the internet, what would it look like?

It would be great to have a corner of the internet that constantly affirms you, acknowledges your strengths, and boosts your confidence. A lot of my friends tell me they don’t get enough of this validation, and I think there’s always room for more of that in everyone’s life. But if I could turn my private corner of the internet into a physical space, it would be equal parts cozy nap spots and a dance party!
